save best friends forever
Dear world (and, more specifically, those in charge of programming at nbc),
I need Best Friends Forever back in my life. I need my friends Lennon and Jessica, and I need them yesterday. I consider it, frankly, a ridiculous situation that they are not going to be on my television screen this evening. I am debatably irate, and certainly befuddled. The fact that their beautiful, silly, relatable show has been pulled off the air is a true travesty. Let me tell you why.
I was really excited for HBO’s Girls to debut. It was billed as a real, relatable show about true girls whose lives (now that I’ve seen it, unfortunately) mirror my own. You know what, though? It’s really not. I don’t like it. But my issue with Girls is really not the point. The point is, the show that IS real, IS relatable, is Best Friends Forever. It’s so true to life and I don’t know any more synonyms for real so suffice to say, it’s just REAL. The fact that Lennon & Jessica have nicknames like “Short Bangs” for people, have serious conversations about Steel Magnolias, the fact that they’re not afraid to switch bras and get grossed out when the other has sex — that shit is real life. I’ve been there, I get it, and I love seeing it on screen in a way that is infinitely more hilarious than when it occurred in my life.
Lennon and Jessica aren’t girls. They’re women. They, more or less, have their shit together (Jessica’s divorce shenanigans nonwithstanding). They wear clothes that fit them and that look nice. They have an apartment that is furnished pretty classy-like. And they’re kind of goofy like me. This really gives me a lot of hope, because currently I’m 23, live at home with my mom, and can’t find a job that pays enough to live on. I aspire to be these women. These wonderful, hilarious women who aren’t always talking about make-up and sex positions, who have inside jokes and can real-talk each other like no one else. I want this.
It really saddens me that we live in a world where drivel like 2 and a half men is embraced by the American public, and a lovely, still-finding-it’s-footing show like Best Friends Forever isn’t even given a chance. Because I mean, really, nbc? You aired four episodes and promoted this show zero percent. Where does the fault for low viewer numbers really go to? Regardless, I know I’m not the only one who loves Best Friends Forever — it’s a frequent conversation topic at work (and for the record, my coworker’s brother likes it too — it’s not just funny for gurlz!). So just give the show a fucking chance, okay? I’m trying to see what’s about to develop between Jess and Rav, I want more Joe in his adorable scruff, I want more Queenetta and her sassy verbage, and I really really really just want to see Lennon and Jessica be best friends for more than four episodes. If I have to live in a world with Whitney, I want to live in a world with Best Friends Forever, too.
